Financial Empowerment

In New York City, more than three million people struggle to afford needed food. An essential element of the fight to end hunger, the Food Bank's Financial Empowerment efforts seek to make sure that these New Yorkers can receive all benefits they are entitled to. Learn more below about our programs to help move low-income New Yorkers out of food poverty toward self-sufficiency.

Food Stamp Prescreening & Outreach
With approximately 700,000 eligible New Yorkers not receiving the food stamp benefits they are entitled to, connecting those in need with the federal Food Stamp Program is essential to the fight against food poverty.

Free Tax Assistance
The Food Bank's Free Tax Assistance Program helped low- to moderate-income New Yorkers receive approximately $100 million in earned income tax credits, benefits and stimulus payments in the 2008 tax season.
