Food Bank for New York City

Food Bank Bites

Agency Relations & Programs
As the primary link between the Food Bank and our network of more than 1,000 food assistance programs, Agency Relations & Programs helps ensure that food programs have the technical assistance and support necessary to feed New York's hungry. The division's responsibilities also include the Food Stamp Prescreening & Outreach Program and government and private grants.

External Relations
Through fundraising efforts, raising public awareness of food poverty in the city and securing in-kind services from businesses, External Relations provides the resources for the Food Bank and our network of food assistance programs to help New Yorkers in need.

Operations
In addition to ensuring that the Food Bank runs efficiently and effectively, the Operations division has a streamlined management system that allows us to procure and deliver more than 60 million pounds of food every year. Operations staff take food orders from food assistance programs, solicit food and food-related donations from the food industry, store and ultimately deliver food to programs citywide. The division also provides Direct Services through our financial empowerment and food programs — which include the Free Tax Assistance Program, the largest civilian program of its type in the country; the Community Kitchen, which provides more than 6,000 meals every month through a soup kitchen, food pantry and Meals-on-Heels program; and the Senior Food Program, which provides social services and more than 200 meals every weekday at two public schools.

Research, Policy & Education
Through original research, the Food Bank gathers the information necessary to accurately educate the public, government officials and other hunger-relief organizations about hunger in New York City. The Food Bank's research enables us to identify emerging trends in hunger, the needs of community food programs and the extent to which hunger has increased citywide. The division also manages our nutrition-education, which is customized and targeted for different age groups, from pre-kindergarteners to seniors.
